Casablanca to Sudirman: Avoid Traffic on Your Jakarta Commute

Casablanca to Sudirman: Why the Commute Matters When Choosing a Home

If you work in the Sudirman central business district (CBD), the daily commute can shape your quality of life as much as the apartment itself. One route known for heavy congestion starts from the east (Tebet or Jatinegara), passes along Jalan Casablanca and continues toward Sudirman.

The usual main road, Jalan Prof. Dr. Satrio, often has narrowing lanes, traffic above the road's capacity and long queues toward the underpass or the Kuningan intersection. Morning and evening rush hours make it worse. This guide covers 3 alternative routes that locals use, so you can judge how a home in this area fits your working day.

Why the Casablanca and Satrio Road Is So Congested

Jalan Casablanca continues into Jalan Prof. Dr. Satrio, a main artery cutting through the Kuningan area. Along it you will find large malls (such as Kota Kasablanka, Lotte Shopping Avenue and Kuningan City), premium office buildings and luxury apartments.

Knowing where the bottlenecks form helps you plan around them. The main ones are:

  • The entrance and exit of Kota Kasablanka mall.
  • The traffic light at the Kuningan intersection (Rasuna Said).
  • The U-turn areas along Jalan Satrio.
  • Queues of vehicles turning toward Mega Kuningan or Sudirman.

3 Alternative Routes From Casablanca to Sudirman

These are the back-road options local Jakartans use to reach Sudirman without sitting on Jalan Satrio.

Route 1: Karet Pedurenan, behind Kuningan City and Lotte Avenue

This suits you if your office is in the Karet area, Sampoerna Strategic Square or WTC Sudirman. Instead of staying on Jalan Satrio, you cut through fairly wide residential streets.

From Jalan Casablanca, after passing Kota Kasablanka, do not take the non-toll flyover; use the lower road. Before the Kuningan underpass, turn left toward Rasuna Epicentrum (Jalan HR Rasuna Said), then make a U-turn where possible and enter Jalan Karet Pedurenan, usually from a small lane beside a hospital or office building.

Follow Jalan Karet Pedurenan behind Kuningan City and Lotte Avenue. You come out at Jalan Karet Sawah or the Karet Belakang area (Jalan Bek Murad), a short distance from Jalan Jenderal Sudirman, in front of Sampoerna Strategic or near Le Meridien.

The advantage is avoiding the Kuningan traffic light and the long underpass queue on Satrio. The caution: these are crowded neighbourhood streets, so slow down and watch for motorbikes and pedestrians.

Route 2: Menteng Dalam and Setiabudi, to Dukuh Atas

If your office is in northern Sudirman (toward Dukuh Atas, Landmark or Sudirman Station), this route is recommended. Well before reaching Kota Kasablanka, for example coming from Tebet, turn onto Jalan Dr. Saharjo and follow it to the Minangkabau/Manggarai traffic light intersection.

Turn left onto Jalan Minangkabau Barat through to the Halimun area. From the Halimun intersection, go straight toward Jalan Galunggung, which leads to the Landmark Tower area and onto Jalan Jenderal Sudirman via Dukuh Atas.

The advantage is that traffic tends to flow better, since the route loops around the Kuningan congestion centre, and it tends to be shaded. Pay attention to the odd-even (Ganjil-Genap) vehicle plate rules on certain roads if you do not turn at the right junction.

Route 3: Through Mega Kuningan, for SCBD and southern Sudirman

If you are heading to SCBD, Polda Metro Jaya or southern Sudirman, you can use the Mega Kuningan district. From Jalan Casablanca, enter Jalan Satrio on the lower lane. After the Rasuna Said intersection, move to the left lane and enter Mega Kuningan through its roundabouts.

Continue through the district until you exit at Jalan Tulodong Atas or Jalan Senopati. From Senopati, follow the road to the back gate of SCBD, or go to Jalan Jenderal Sudirman via the Patung Pemuda Membangun statue.

Mega Kuningan has very wide, tidy and orderly roads. At certain hours the queue to enter can be fairly heavy, but movement is far more predictable than being stuck on Jalan Satrio.

Smart Driving Tips for Jakarta Traffic

Besides knowing alternative routes, a few habits will save time:

  • Shift your departure time: the most critical window on the Casablanca route is 07.00 to 09.00 WIB. If your office has flexi-time, try leaving at 06.00 WIB or after 09.30 WIB.
  • Check a navigation app in real time: back streets are not always clear, and a broken-down garbage truck can make a small road worse than the main one. Turn on Google Maps or Waze before starting the car and watch for dark red routes.
  • Know the odd-even hours: make sure your plate number matches today's date if you touch main roads such as Gatot Subroto, Rasuna Said or Sudirman.
  • Consider park and ride: leave your vehicle at a nearby commuter train (KRL) station, such as Tebet or Manggarai, and continue by train or TransJakarta to Sudirman.

What This Means When You Choose Where to Live

Relying on a single main road means leaving your productive time to the mercy of traffic. Combining route knowledge, good timing and a backup such as park and ride makes the commute far more manageable.

When viewing a home near Casablanca or Kuningan, try the drive at your real commuting hours and ask your agent which route suits your office location.
